Katrina's Story

Craniofacial Health Coach

Katrina Fahey, a Masters student at James Cook University studying Lifestyle Medicine, is a craniofacial health coach well versed in evolution and anthropology.

Katrina investigates the relationship between shrinking craniofacial size in modern civilizations and its relationship with disease onset in her new book, Beauty is Bone Deep. Suffering from a collapsed jaw after terrible dentistry herself, Katrina learned that by stimulating your upper jaw (maxilla) to grow, you can open up your face aesthetically, open up your airways, and restore health.

Katrina’s story began similarly to many

She was recommended to wear metal braces in her mid-twenties to correctly align her teeth. Not long after removing braces, she damaged the retainer that was supposed to support and maintain her new teeth and jaw structure and asked for a replacement.

Two
Deterioration of retainer and facial changes

With the slow process in receiving another retainer in the months that followed, Katrina noticed a rapid deterioration of her ‘new jaw’ and then when she finally received the replacement retainer, it did not fit. A gradual transformation followed in those consecutive months – with her face seemingly melting into the centre of her skull. Naturally, Katrina sought answers.

Three

Seeking alternative solutions to surgery

Her dentist dismissed her concerns, whilst orthodontists suggested that surgery was the only solution to address the facial damage. Reluctant to pursue invasive surgery aimed at straightening her jawline but leaving the cheek and eye line off-kilter, Katrina held onto the hope that there was another way to restore her facial alignment.

Four

Discovery of non-invasive orthodontic treatments

Doing her own online research, Katrina learned about oral treatments using non-invasive tools that apply pressure to the jaw internally to promote craniofacial growth. Her research eventually led her to a local Australian orthodontist with experience in developing and fixing adult faces, but more importantly, had knowledge about functional orthodontics that stimulate jaw growth.

Five

Jaw expansion and facial transformation

With an orthotropic gadget worn inside the roof of her mouth, she began a process called palate expansion, causing the top jaw to expand and remodel little by little over time. In the weeks and months that followed, Katrina witnessed her face gradually become straighter, larger, and, well, more beautiful. The orthodontist successfully treated Katrina skeletally, however it wasn’t until she educated herself on the intricacies of the muscles of the craniofacial network, that Katrina began healing her remaining asymmetries.

Education in Myofunctional Therapy and lifestyle medicine

From here, Katrina dove head first into the principles of orofacial myology and completed her training with Australia’s finest Academy of Myofunctional Therapists. She continued building on her education in the field and upon her postgraduate degree in health psychology, Katrina pursued a Master’s degree in lifestyle medicine. In her approach to enhancing people’s well-being, she began to prioritise the role of lifestyle over cognitive-behavioural therapy.

She believes that by addressing the fundamental building blocks essential for a healthy and fulfilling life, we can set a solid foundation before delving into past traumas with psychological interventions.

Beauty is Bone Deep

Readers of Katrina’s book will be educated to her findings that heavily modified supermarket foods and technological food processing interfere with your face’s ability to grow to full size. In fact, in a world of misinformation, our current cultural language describes faces as either beautiful or ugly as a result of genetics. This extremely limited view leaves many people feeling self-conscious or defeated instead of properly taking measures to resolve their development issues and restore the health of their body. When realising that both environment and genetics govern facial form, you can come to appreciate that a beautiful face is one that forms optimally for function.

Learn How We Grow a Beautiful Face

This book educates you to the findings that heavily modified supermarket foods and technological food processing interfere with your face’s ability to grow to full size. In fact, in a world of misinformation, our current cultural language describes faces as either beautiful or ugly as a result of genetics.

The saying “beauty is only skin deep” has become a familiar cliché, often used to downplay the significance of beauty in comparison to inner qualities. Of course, overall attractiveness encompasses important qualities such as behaviour, intellectual and emotional intelligence, compassion, and the expression of our energetic nature, but this does not need to subordinate the additional role physical appearance plays in our lives.
